But not anymore. Destination NSW and Westfield have launched a new AU$3 million (£2 million) campaign which brings Australia's most iconic animals to you.

The 'meet the locals' campaign is being rolled out in several of the country's shopping centres. Using innovative special effects, kangaroos, dolphins, pelicans and whales are all recreated allowing people to interact and even pet the animals.

"By blending digital imagery with live video, the participant and those watching get the impression of a real-life interactive experience," said George Souris, minister for tourism and major events.

"This technology will be in place at four of the participating shopping centres allowing shoppers to instantly see themselves in picturesque regional locations.

"We want to give city residents a taste of what's in store, so we have used the very latest technology to pique their interest and motivate them to take a short break in regional NSW."

Australia is one of only 17 megadiverse countries in the world and is home to many world famous and exotic species. To see some of the best wildlife in the world, either virtually or in reality, you'll need an Australian Travel Visa. The most popular of these is the ETA Visa, because it can be easily and quickly applied for online.
