Tourism Queensland's "best job in the world" campaign offers one applicant the chance to receive a six-month contract as "island caretaker" on Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef.

As part of their "employment", they will receive a generous pay package of AUD$150,000 and access to a private luxury villa for accommodation. In exchange, they will be required to document their experience through pictures, videos and a weekly blog.

The campaign has been a huge success for Tourism Queensland, apparently exceeding all expectations as the server for the website was crashed after a flood of visitors. However, this technical problem was soon fixed and there have since been over 2.3 million visitors to the site and over 10,000 video applications made.

Applications have come from all over the world, with over 660 from the UK alone. Tourism Queensland have also reported that applications have been received from such varied locations as Mongolia, Kazakhstan and the Vatican City.

The end date for applications is set at the 22nd of February, with a winner to be decided in May. For the unlucky majority who fail to win a free trip to Australia, Australian tourist visas are still available through the instant online application.
