Mayan apocalypse pushes tourism in Australia

The ancient Mayan civilisation's prediction that the world would end on 21, December put plenty of people on edge, forcing many to seek reassurance from those at the supposed forefront of the apocalypse: Australia.

The ancient Mayan civilisation - based in modern day Mexico - predicted a series of apocalyptical events would take place on or around 21, December 2012 - the end of the ancient society's 5,125-year-long-calendar. While no such disasters eventually occurred, thousands of people sought reassurance from Australia - one of the countries first in line to reach the dreaded date.

Tourism Australia has been one of Facebook's most popular pages since reaching two million fans earlier this year following a highly successful campaign based on Sydney's New Year celebrations. However, the page was flooded with posts such as 'any survivors?' and 'are you guys still alive' on the last day of the Mayan calendar.

While the majority of posts were tongue-in-cheek, the page's response of 'Yes, we're alive' resulted in over 100,000 likes and more than 10,000 comments and pushed the page's total likes to a whopping four million people. And now Tourism Australia is hoping to capitalise on the page's popularity.

"With so many predictions that the end of the world is near, and with so many fans of our country around the globe, we reckon we owe the Mayans a bit of a pat on the back for helping push our Facebook page through the four million fan milestone," said Tourism Australia's managing director, Andrew McEvoy.

"We'd like to reassure our fans aorund the world that Australia is very much alive and well, and still the perfect place for a holiday."

Tourism Australia is currently the most popular destination page on Facebook, as well as fellow social network Google+ and photo sharing site Instagram.

If you survived the Mayan apocalypse and want to see Australia, you'll need an Australian Travel Visa. The most popular of these is the ETA Visa, because it can be easily and quickly applied for online.
