A short film produced by Tourism Australia following several people's journeys to Sydney for the celebrations and their hopes for the new year went viral after gaining 85,000 new fans and almost half a million views within three days.

The page was originally launched in May 2008 and generated almost a million fans in 2011 alone, with Tourism Australia claiming the photos of the country's iconic animals like koalas and kangaroos were to thank for generating the majority of the page's 'likes' and shares until the video's posting.

The video shows how vital social networking sites like Facebook is in promoting Australia internationally said Andrew McEvoy, Tourism Australia's Managing Director.

"Through Facebook we get real stories about what people are currently thinking about Australia which influences our marketing and makes the platform a primary interaction point with our global advocates" said Mr McEvoy.

Anyone without an Australian or New Zealand passport who is travelling Australia must have an Australian Travel Visa. The most popular of these is the ETA Visa, because it can be easily and quickly applied for online.
