Tourists extending trips to Australia

A recent report published by Tourism Research Australia shows more international tourists are visiting Australia for longer.
06 September 2012
The report, the International Visitor Survey, showed that on average international tourists were spending 4% longer in Australia than the previous year - almost 200 million visitor nights in total.

While New Zealand predictably was the largest source of tourists, Britain remained second among source countries despite a 16% surge in the number of Chinese visitors to Australia thanks to an aggressive marketing campaign in Asia.

Tourism in Australia had been one of the only casualties of Australia's economic success; while the majority of Europe and the US - traditionally two of the country's largest sources of tourism - have struggled to recover from the effects of the global financial crisis, Australia largely remained unaffected.

However, this meant the Australian dollar surged ahead against other currencies, making it more expensive for international tourists.

"This uncertainty is expected to continue in the short term due to the Australian dollar being at an all-time high against the Euro, and persistent economic problems in Europe," said Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson.

But as the economies stabilise and balances begin to stabilise, Mr Ferguson says tourism figures beginning to grow once again are a welcome site.

"It is encouraging to see signs of recovery in some traditional markets, with arrivals from the United States increasing by 5% to the highest number recorded for a June quarter since the [global financial crisis], and a 12% increase from Japan for the June quarter."

Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy echoed the minister's sentiments, saying the industry as a whole was growing as well as visitor spending.

If you would like to take advantage of one of Australia's most popular tourist destinations, you'll need an Australian Travel Visa. The most popular of these is the ETA Visa, because it can be easily and quickly applied for online.
