Working Holiday Funds

Working holiday Australia

Apply for your Working holiday in Australia

To qualify for a working holiday in Australia, you are expected to have sufficient funds to support yourself for the start of your holiday and you are also expected to have the means to leave Australia when necessary.

The following may help clarify exactly what the financial requirements are for an Australian working holiday visa.

What constitutes sufficient funds?  The Government has put this figure at A$5,000, roughly £2,200 or €3,000.

How do I prove I have sufficient funds? You may be required to produce evidence of this when you enter Australia.  A certified bank statement will do.

Do I need to purchase a return flight?  You are also expected to either arrive in Australia on a return ticket, or at least have the funds to purchase a flight back (for UK and Ireland this is $1,000).   If you are, for example, on an around the world trip and Australia is not your final destination before returning home, an onwards ticket to any destination outside Australia, or again the funds to purchase one, will suffice.

Once in Australia how do I start work and top up my funds? You will need to obtain a tax file number (TFN) before you can start work in Australia.  ETA-visas.co.uk will be able to assist you with this once you have your visa granted.

Although not a requirement, it may prove useful if you ask for a visa label to be placed inside your passport when you arrive in Australia.  This will show potential employers straight away that you have the right to work in Australia.

There are several options to obtain a visa label:

  • If you arrive at Sydney Airport, you can have your visa label printed before you leave the airport. When your passport is stamped on entry, ask for directions to the Visa Label desk.
  • You can send your passport (with a stamped, self-addressed, registered envelope) by registered mail to:
    GPO Box 1496
    Hobart, Tasmania, 7001
    Australia
  • Once you arrive in Australia, you can go to any departmental office to have your visa label printed.
